Welcome
With the publication of the Stern Report and overwhelming evidence of man-made global warming in the latest IPCC report, we believe our message has never been more urgent. We welcome the fact that the other parties are at last coming to address environmental issues but think their policies are flawed and we do not believe they have the will to take the serious action necessary in building sustainable communities and avoiding dangerous climate change. Our first task, at least, is to see that their rhetoric is matched with action. We need to go much further, much faster, however so we will challenge them at the ballot box locally and nationally at every opportunity.
The Green Party believes localisation is a key part of the solution to the challenges which will impact on us all in the near future (of which Climate Change is just one). It will benefit our local economy in creating thousands of new jobs and in providing energy and food security. It will improve people’s quality of life and safeguard public services. We think it is the best way to build strong communities and protect the environment for our children and the future.
Wolverhampton & Walsall GP is a small but growing local party, and will be holding our next meeting and AGM in Wolverhampton on Thursday February 15th. At present, we meet only quarterly on the third Thursday of the month. Though we are only a small group, there are lots of different activities to get involved with both locally and regionally. Our focus is not purely political, as we have opportunities for individuals interested in practical action: helping to raise funds at music festivals; giving presentations at schools and to other community groups; attending courses in making your own solar heating systems (!)
Our aim is to stand candidates in all wards in local elections in both Wolverhampton and Walsall (even if we are starting from a low base!). We expect to be contesting parliamentary seats in the next General Election in both towns and will support members in setting up other local parties nearby.
[Further to the late Parliamentary Election campaign in June 2005 and a ballot of the local membership, a new local party was launched in South Staffordshire, which, considering the geography of that area and for other practical reasons, meets with us, W&WGP, in Wolverhampton pro tem]
Even if it's a bit sketchy now (maybe you can help!), we will be updating the web site on a regular basis, so please visit again soon.
